3 Brothers BBQ - A Taste of Mississippi in Bayside
Another awesome place that Meg and I hit up on our Bayside adventure this weekend was 3 Brothers BBQ. Noticing this place before, it stood out to me as something more than just a BBQ joint, but more of an institution. Maybe it's the artifacts peppered throughout the restaurant or the friendly, and almost family-like staff, but there sure is something special about this place.
Atmosphere:
A hybrid between a deli and a casual restaurant, the way you dine here is really up to you. You can certainly take food to go, or eat in and take your time. There's no waitstaff, which makes things easier I think, as you can linger as long as you want and keep the check to a minimum.
The decor is definitely interesting, and it's evident that 3 Brothers BBQ doesn't take to the "less is more" motto. You'll quickly learn what I mean just by looking at the packed walls, decked with nostalgic photographs, artwork, little knick-knacks, basically anything and everything they've collected throughout the last 7 years. In a way, it feels a little bit like the walls of your parents' basement, proud of their heritage without any type of filter. I think this adds to its whimsy charm and authenticity and we felt very comfortable there.
Food:
It's simply overwhelming to choose one thing from their extensive menu of BBQ platters, sandwiches, combo platters, steakhouse burgers, po' boy sandwiches and more. But we managed to go for one of the simplest and classic things on the menu, which was the pulled pork sandwich. As I hinted above, 3 Brothers boasts Mississippi style BBQ, which is known for pork.
Pulled Pork Sandwich - Meg and I split the beauty you see above, which was simply awesome. The best part for me was that it combined two juxtaposing textures of tender and crunchy - the former coming from the perfectly smoked meat and the latter from the cole slaw that's placed directly into the sandwich. I loved how the slaw cut the richness of the meat and gave it that much-desired tang and freshness. The meat itself was cooked perfectly and wasn't too stringy, consisting of nice chunky pieces that were a pleasure to bite into. 3 Brothers' BBQ sauce was a nice accompaniment - it was on the sweeter side, making this sandwich the forbidden fruit of bbq so to speak.
Service and Cost:
The staff here is really wonderful and super friendly. You can tell they're not just employees, but that they're vested in what they're doing. Case in point, while we were ordering our sandwich, our server told his fellow employee that he just became a grandfather yet again - the two shared a nice moment, while Meg and I too were tickled to experience their joy. But all emotions aside, our sandwich was prepared in minutes - all nice and hot and mighty tasty.
Costs are really inexpensive for good quality BBQ. We paid $8.95 for our sandwich, and the other goodies aren't too much more:
Starters - $2.75 - $15.95
BBQ Platters - $10.95 - $16.95
