Visiting the Hollywood Farmer's Market

Since the weather is getting warmer and warmer as the days go by, the farmer's markets around town are also getting more plentiful.  I love visiting the local farmer's markets in Portland, with the PSU Farmer's Market being the i ching.  However, I never want to underestimate the smaller, local players because those too carry hidden gems.  One such market I visited just last weekend is the Hollywood Farmer's Market, which takes place on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month til March and then starting in April, it'll become weekly.

Location:
Occupying a centrally located block on NE Hancock Street between 44th and 45th Avenues, the Hollywood Farmer's Market isn't large but it's got plenty to offer for visitors.  From fresh flowers to produce, naturally grown meat and wild caught fish, as well as specialty foods products, there's something for everyone.  I also spotted a vegan food truck selling burrito bowls that seemed popular, and I like that they incorporate on-the-go dining into the experience.  On a lovely, sunny day, I can see myself just hanging out and enjoying the food al fresco.

Vendors:
As I already mentioned, there's a good variety of vendors to choose from and I think their prices are also competitive - I'd say more so than at PSU's Farmer's Market.  Noticing these beautiful carrots (pictured above) as well as multi-colored heirloom potatoes, I immediately stocked up on my root veggies.

The potatoes came in pre-packaged bags for $5 or you can assemble your own, which I chose to do.  They made for excellent oven baked fries and Dan and I devoured them with some homemade chicken wings that same evening.  Also, the gracious folks at this stand offered $1 bag of kale with any purchase of potatoes, which is a great deal.  The kale was gorgeous and robust, so I decided to make chips out out if and enjoy it as an everyday snack.

Aside from the produce, I also indulged in a fresh cut flower purchase that you see above.  Loving these gorgeous calla lilies, they were just $5 for this hefty bunch, which was a total steal.  I love how they look in our living room, adding a cheery sophistication and a touch of spring.

I'll certainly be back to this market in April when it returns weekly and I hope you'll check it out too!
