Gluten Free Sweet Magic at Petunia's Pies & Pastries

In the mood for something sweet and indulgent, I decided to make a pit stop at Petunia's Pies & Pastries on my way home from work.  Often passing this sweet little shop while walking to the Max train, I was immediately captivated by its beautiful facade and sweet pink and white decor.  After trying it for the first time today, I know I'll be back soon and here's why:

Atmosphere:
Almost as good as its desserts is Petunia's charming atmosphere.  It all feels very cheery and the beautiful pastel colors found inside the space perfectly exemplify the goodies that lie behind its large glass display case.  It's also hard to ignore that everything from the flowers to the waitress' uniforms are coordinated perfectly, showcasing a soft, feminine vibe.

Not only can you take Petunia's treats home with you and enjoy with your loved one, but the space also serves as an in-dining establishment - offering savory foods and wine as well.  On a random Wednesday eve, I noticed a nicely filled room with all sorts of parties including groups of girlfriends, people with kids and couples.

Dessert:
Something surprising I found out about Petunia's menu is that it's all vegan and gluten free. Discovering this only after I left the storefront and perused their website, I was astonished that I didn't realize it before - especially after taking a bite out of their marionberry bar.

Marionberry Crumble Bar
- Given that marionberries are now officially in season, this bar was naturally calling my name.  Sporting a beautiful indigo color poking through all those crunchy crumbles, it tasted even better than it looked.  A little hint of cinnamon added a welcome surprise to the overall flavor profile, and I'm also glad to say that it wasn't too sweet.  Dan and I split it in half and it was just enough - he also not believing that this very delicious and surprisingly light dessert was gluten free.

Service and Cost:
I have to admit that the service here was a little on the slow side, especially since the line wasn't too long.  While I waited just a little bit, my waitress was kind and jovial--matching the aura of the atmosphere nicely.

Costs are expensive but that's to be expected for a gourmet dessert place in Downtown Portland - and especially one selling gluten free and vegan confections.  The bar I mention above set me back $3.75.
